Text Box: Des Moines Springfest Horse Show
History and Breeds
Des Moines has hosted an early Spring horse show for more than 50 years. The show was originally operated as a fund raiser for the Des Moines Junior League, later followed by the Iowa Horse Shows Association. Barry Yount, an Altoona horseman, ran the show for several years. With his re-location to Arizona, the show was in jeopardy. Five years ago a committee was formed comprised of local horse professionals and amateurs and the show re-named Des Moines Springfest. It was decided to operate the show as a benefit for Blank Children's hospital, specifically for the drug affected babies under the care of Dr. Rizwan Shah in the Regional Child Protection center at Blank. The Springfest Committee also decided to promote the horse show as a community entertainment event. In addition to the beautiful visual of the show, the public are offered participation opportunities; a dog -in- costume class open to everyone, a stick horse class open to all children age 6 and under and viewing other events such as "Celebrity Driving" class or "Adopt - a- Pet" displays by The Raccoon Valley Animal Rescue League.

The Des Moines Springfest Horse Show features two magnificent breeds of horses. The American Saddlebred horse was developed here in America, primarily in the Southern States. Considered one the most beautiful breeds, these horses are used for all types of riding. These horses are known for their extreme presence in the show ring. As well as performing at the walk, trot and canter, some Saddlebreds are taught two additional gaits: the elegant slow gait and the high speed, flashy rack.

The Hackney Pony was developed from the Hackney Horse in Great Britain and is used primarily in driving competitions. They are known for their extreme animation and action. A few classes are held for Hackney ponies under saddle.
